Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine highlighted the importance of interfaith cooperation and religious freedom in a message marking the 30th anniversary of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations.
In a social media post following the anniversary celebrations, Metropolitan Epifaniy, who currently serves as the Council’s rotating chairman, said he had extended his congratulations to bishops, pastors, clergy, distinguished guests, diplomats, partners, and friends gathered for the occasion. He noted that three decades of the Council’s existence represented a significant milestone in the history of independent Ukraine.
The Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine described the Council as a unique platform for cooperation that brings together religious communities representing more than 90 percent of Ukraine’s religious organizations. He said the body operates on principles of equality, voluntary participation, and independence, serving as an important institution of civil society.
Metropolitan Epifaniy stated that the Council stands as a living example of how diverse religious communities can preserve their distinct identities and traditions while working together as one community. He remarked that its members are united not by uniformity but by mutual respect and shared values.
According to Metropolitan Epifaniy, the churches and religious organizations of Ukraine recognize a common responsibility before God and society. While theological beliefs and confessional traditions differ, he said, all members share a commitment to protecting and nurturing religious freedom in Ukraine and beyond.
He emphasized that the strength of the Council lies in its ability to respect differences without attempting to determine whose theology is superior. Instead, he said, members focus on identifying common values and transforming them into practical cooperation for the benefit of society.
Metropolitan Epifaniy also reflected on the historical experience of religious persecution endured by various faith communities and pointed to the ongoing restrictions faced by believers living in territories of Ukraine currently under Russian occupation. These experiences, he said, demonstrate that freedom comes at a cost and requires constant protection and collective effort.
Addressing the ongoing war, the Metropolitan described interfaith cooperation and mutual understanding as an important element of Ukraine’s resilience in the face of Russia’s invasion. He expressed gratitude to the Council’s partners and supporters and offered special thanks to Ukraine’s defenders, assuring them of the Church’s prayers.
Concluding his message, Metropolitan Epifaniy prayed that God would bless Ukraine with victory and a lasting, just peace, while expressing hope for the continued unity and cooperation of the country’s religious communities.
