The Orthodox Archdiocese of Zambia, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Greece and the Hellenic Association of Zambia, held a solemn Victory Day commemoration on May 11.
The ceremony paid tribute to the Greeks who resisted the enemy forces during World War II, honoring their bravery and contributions to the war effort.
Distinguished speakers, including Honorary Consul Michael Kroupnik, Hellenic Association President George Liakopoulos, and First Zambian Army Commander General Kingsley Chinkuli, praised the heroic spirit of those who fought for peace and freedom. Metropolitan Ioannis also delivered remarks, emphasizing the importance of peace and extending Mother’s Day greetings.
In his greetings: According to the amazing Book of Genesis from the Holy Scriptures, woman was the very last creature that God created at the end of everything, and on this day that we commemorate, we give respect, honor and love to all our daughters, sisters and mothers throughout the world.
Let us pay our respects to the most beautiful and final composer of God’s creation.
The event included a moving candlelight vigil, the unveiling of a World Peace Bust, the laying of wreaths and a moment of silence. Tilyenji Kaunda, son of Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, gave a heartfelt description of the Freedom Bust. A display of Holocaust photographs underscored the devastating effects of war.
Metropolitan Ioannis emphasized the need to prioritize peace, noting the destructive impact of war on families, communities and nations. He thanked government officials, diplomats and guests, including representatives from the Embassies of Mozambique and Cuba, Tilyenji and Kaweche Kaunda, for participating in this meaningful event.
