In honor of the commemoration of the Fall of Constantinople, the Metropolis of Italy posted a heartfelt message on social media, emphasizing the city’s enduring significance and heritage.
Through inspired and thoughtful language, the message emphasizes that: “The memory of the city is not merely historical. It is a spiritual compass and a call to struggle for truth, freedom, and dignity.”
The full message reads as follows:
On this day, Constantinople, the Queen of Cities, fell. Yet she was not extinguished. The thousand-year-old Byzantine Empire may have collapsed, but it left behind a legacy of faith, culture, and an indomitable spirit. The lament of the fall became a seed of hope. Tragedy gave rise to new centers of Hellenism across the lands of the West and in Italy, where refugees, scholars, and clergy carried the light of Orthodoxy and learning.
The memory of the City is more than just history. It serves as a spiritual compass and a call to strive for truth, freedom, and dignity. Today, Greek communities in the West do more than commemorate the fall; they bear witness that the light was never extinguished. Our faith, our roots, and our anticipation of the resurrection remain alive.
Do not lift your hearts, for they are already there.
