The Benevolent Brotherhood of the Ladies of Makrochori was first established in 1906 when the Greek Orthodox community in Constantinople was flourishing. The organization initially consisted of 20 members and an 8-member board of directors.
Some of the philanthropic duties of the Brotherhood, depending on its resources, included maintaining the sanctity and decorum of the Holy Church, supervising, making, and supervising the sacred vestments, repairing sacred vessels and icons, beautifying the cemetery, managing the decoration of the Girls’ School, assisting families in need, assisting in the education of their children, helping to secure employment for their daughters, and organizing all cultural and community events throughout the year at the Makrochori Community Hall. These activities culminated in the Christmas Charity Dinner and the Festive Dinner for the Feast of St. George.
In 2004, due to various challenges, the Brotherhood ceased its activities. However, it was re-established in November 2024 with the paternal support and blessing of Elder Metropolitan Apostolos of Derkoi. The new Board of Directors now consists of seven members. It has adopted a new Charter which outlines the mission of the Brotherhood, the duties of the Board and its members, the procedures for General Assemblies, as well as the sources and management of funds, tailored to the current needs of the Greek Orthodox community in Constantinople.
