On Sunday, July 20, 2025, the Cypriot community in New York gathered to mark the 51st anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus with deeply moving events held at the historic Cathedral of Saints Constantine and Helen in Brooklyn. The ceremonies were widely praised for their organization and solemnity.
Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos delivered a message of unity and perseverance alongside diplomats, politicians, and community leaders. The event was coordinated by the Federation of Cypriot American Organizations in partnership with the World Coordinating Committee of the Cypriot Struggle (PSEKA) and the Consulate General of Cyprus in New York.
Philip Christopher, president of PSEKA, noted that similar commemorations took place simultaneously across other US cities with Cypriot and broader communities.
The day began with a Divine Liturgy and Memorial Service led by Bishop Athenagoras, assisted by Father Evagoras Konstantinidis, followed by a communal gathering.
Despite varying content, all speakers united in their resolve to preserve memory, identity, and the pursuit of justice for Cyprus.
