Memory of Venerable John the Hesychast

Memory of Venerable John the Hesychast

The Church commemorates Saints Sabbas the Goth, Patriarch Cyril of Constantinople, New Martyr John from Ioannina (1526), Saint Cosmas, Bishop of Chalcedon, and Venerable John the Hesychast, the disciple of St. Gregory of Decapolis.

Saint John the Hesychast lived during the 8th century AD and from a young age, he loved the Church. He devoted himself to reading the Holy Bible and decided to dedicate his life to Christ.

Imitating the way of life indicated by Jesus Christ to those who want to fight in the present life with a steadfast will and with exemplary self-denial, Venerable John renounced all mundane things and dedicated himself as a burning candle to God and his neighbor.

Thus, Saint John was initiated into the monastic life by St. Gregory the Decapolitan, who was a great desert teacher and had experience in spiritual matters.

After the passing of his teacher, Venerable John went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. In the Holy Land, his fervent faith in Christ was revitalized, as well as his dedication to his will and command.

He settled in Charitonos Monastery where he reposed in the Lord peacefully.
