The Orthodox Church commemorates today Saint Theodora of Caesarea and Saint Anysia of Salonika.
Saint Anysia the Virgin martyr of Thessaloniki was the daughter of pious and wealthy parents and lived during the Diocletian-Maximian persectutions. When she was orphaned at a young age, she managed her life and great fortune with wisdom and restraint. She helped those in need and set as the purpose of her life to do and learn what is pleasing to God.
Her reputation provoked the hatred of the pagans against her, as a result of which they led her to martyrdom. As she was walking towards the temple of the twelve gods, a soldier arrested her and forced her to make sacrifices on the altars of the idols.
In her persistent denial, he became enraged and began to curse Christ. When she reacted, he slaughtered her with his sword and in this way Saint Anysia received the crown of martyrdom.
