Our Holy Church commemorates today Saint Sophronius of Jerusalem, Patriarch of Jerusalem and Venerable George, Abbot of Sinai.
Saint Sophronius was born in Damascus, Syria, around 575 to pious and humble parents, who raised him with Christian education. He followed classical studies. He went to Jerusalem, where he became a monk in the Monastery of Saint Theodosius and wrote down the lives and spiritual wisdom of the ascetics they met.
He was staunch opponent the heresy of Monotheism by writing works against the heterodox teaching. After the death of Patriarch Modestus, Saint Sophronius was elected Patriarch of Jerusalem in 634.
As the Head of the Church of Jerusalem, he has stepped up his fight on the heretics. He fell asleep to the Lord around 638 AD.
He wrote eminent theological texts and homilies. One illustrative example is the encomium to Saint John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria, and to Saint Mary of Egypt.
