Our Church today, February 7, commemorates the 1003 martyrs of Nicomedia. It also commemorates Saints Parthenius, Bishop of Lampsacus, and Aprion, Bishop of Cyprus.
Saint Parthenius came from Melitopolis in Asia Minor and was the son of deacon Christopher, who taught him the Orthodox faith and tradition. He lived under the rule of Saint Constantine the Great. At a young age he became a monk and was zealously devoted to prayer, spiritual practice, and work.
His entire presence was appreciated by Bishop Philetus of Melitoupolis, who also ordained him a priest. Later, Archbishop Achilles of Cyzicus made him bishop of the city of Lampsacus.
The city of Lampsacus was famous at that time for its many idolaters. However, the Saint, with his virtuous life, his morality and his wise speeches, as well as with his many miracles, succeeded in bringing a multitude of people in the way of Christ.
