The Church commemorates Saint Luke of Steiris, Boeotia, Greece.
Saint Luke was born in Phocis in AD 896. After finishing school, he took care of animals and practiced spiritually and painfully both his body and soul.
When his parents passed away, he distributed all his wealth to the poor. After many journeys, he settled permanently on Mount Stirion. He built a monastery there, along with other monks, in which, thanks to his spirituality and his great fame, crowds of people gathered. He reposed in the Lord in AD 953 and his holy relic remains incorruptible.
The monastery remains today a beacon of Orthodoxy and an eloquent proof of modern monasticism. The katholikon of the Monastery is an important example of Byzantine magnificence, both for its architecture and for the great mosaics. It has been dubbed by the inhabitants of Central Greece as “the Hagia Sophia of Roumeli.”
