Today we celebrate the memory of Saint Irene, the Abbess of the monastery of Chrysovalantou in Constantinople.
Saint Irene was born in Cappadocia and lived in the early 9th century A.D. She stood out among her peers for her beauty and courtesy, which prompted the interest of the imperial officer who proposed to her. Her initial positive response was overthrown when, before arriving at the palace, she passed from the Monastery of Chrysovalantou.
The ascetic life and the humiliation of the nuns had a deep effect on her and prompted her to follow that same path. She remained in the monastery, living as a struggler in the spiritual trials. It was precise because of her spiritual progress that she was appointed successor to the Abbess when she passed away.
God rewarded the struggles and the virtue of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou, endowing her with the charisma of miracles. Today there are quite a few believers who appeal to Saint Irene to help them cope with difficulties.
