The Church commemorates today Hieromartyr Clement, Pope of Rome.
Saint Clement of Rome is one of the Apostolic Fathers of the Church. Apostolic Fathers were Christian theologians who had personally heard the preaching of the disciples of Christ and were the first successors of the apostolic succession.
Saint Clement, a descendant of an aristocratic family in Rome, studied all the sciences and received a Greek education. His acquaintance with the Apostle Peter became an occasion to embrace Christianity, to enter the Church, and to devote himself wholeheartedly to the spread of the Holy Gospel.
He wrote many books which are significant for church literature. In AD 92, he ascended the episcopal throne of Rome, which he enlightened with his ethos and missionary activity. During the persecutions against the Christians under the reign of Domitian, he was exiled to Chersonesus where he was martyred by being tied to an anchor and thrown from a boat into the Black Sea.
