Giorgia Meloni met today in Rome with Volodymyr Zelensky, reaffirming Italy’s strong political and strategic support for Ukraine amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
Following the meeting, Meloni emphasized that supporting Ukraine remains a matter of strategic importance, noting that “Europe’s security is also at stake.” She underlined Italy’s commitment to contributing to solutions capable of safeguarding Kyiv’s sovereignty and ensuring long-term stability.
The Italian Prime Minister added that, within the framework of the G7, member states will continue to promote economic pressure measures against Russia, while also working to guarantee sustained financial support for Ukraine, in line with decisions taken by the European Council.
Meloni also expressed hope that the process of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union could begin soon. In addition, she highlighted Italy’s interest in developing joint drone production initiatives with Kyiv, describing Ukraine as playing a key role in this sector.
The two leaders also discussed broader international developments, including tensions in the Iran conflict and the situation in the Gulf region. Meloni reiterated her government’s support for a ceasefire and expressed hope that peace negotiations could resume despite the current difficulties.
For his part, President Zelensky stressed the importance of cooperation with Italy in strengthening security guarantees and thanked Meloni for her “personal efforts aimed at protecting European interests.” He also highlighted the global implications of ongoing conflicts, noting rising living costs and increasing energy risks.
Zelensky concluded by emphasizing the need for an effective defense system and closer coordination with international partners, pointing to growing interest in expanding cooperation between the Italian and Ukrainian defense industries.
