Melbourne: The Saturday of Lazarus at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Richmond

On the blessed occasion of the Feast of the Saturday of Lazarus, the Church of the Holy Trinity in Richmond was graced with the presence of Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne, who presided over the Matins and Divine Liturgy with deep reverence.

Faithful from across the suburbs of Richmond, Hawthorn, Kew and Camberwell gathered in prayerful anticipation, as this significant feast—marking the resurrection of Lazarus and foreshadowing the triumph of Christ over death—ushered in the final days before Holy Week.

His Grace was joined at the Holy Altar by the parish priest Father Emmanuel Ioannidis, and Father Efstathios Papadopoulos, creating a moment of spiritual unity and joy for the local Orthodox community.

During the Divine Liturgy, His Grace conveyed the paternal blessings and warm wishes of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia to the faithful, emphasising the Archbishop’s continuous love, prayers, and spiritual care for the flock throughout the Diocese of Melbourne.

In his sermon, Bishop Kyriakos reflected on the profound significance of the resurrection of Lazarus, drawing attention to Christ’s authority over life and death. “Today, Christ calls to His beloved friend Lazarus with the voice of God, and death itself trembles,” His Grace proclaimed. “This is not only the resurrection of one man, but the beginning of the defeat of death for all humanity.”

His Grace went on to encourage the faithful to live with the hope of the Resurrection ever before them:

“The miracle of Lazarus reminds us that our Lord does not abandon us in our sorrow, nor in our tombs. He weeps with us, and then He calls us forth—into light, into life, into communion with Him.”

His Grace also highlighted the connection between this feast and the upcoming celebration of Palm Sunday: “As we move from the tomb of Lazarus to the gates of Jerusalem, let us follow Christ with the same faith and courage as those who shouted ‘Hosanna,’ knowing that the road ahead leads through the Cross—but ends in eternal life.”

The service was marked by a spirit of reverence, with the chanting filling the sacred space with joy and awe. Following the Divine Liturgy, His Grace greeted parishioners warmly, offering words of encouragement and spiritual counsel as the community prepares for the solemn days of Holy Week.

The Church of the Holy Trinity expressed its deep gratitude for the presence of His Grace and the visiting clergy, recognizing the day as a spiritual blessing for the parish and a reaffirmation of unity within the Archdiocese.
