On Sunday, August 7, 2022, with the blessing of Archbishop Makarios of Australia and under the guidance of Bishop Kyriakos “Five Loaves” volunteers came to St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church in Forrest Hill, Melbourne, to make and then distribute sandwiches to homeless and people living in crisis accommodation.
Approximately 50 volunteers attended the “Five Loaves” event to make a mixture of ham and cheese, cheese and cheese and vegemite sandwiches in less than an hour.
The “Five Loaves” sandwich making program continues to expand following events at Sts Constantine and Helen, South Yarra and now at St Andrew’s in Forrest Hill.
Many of the sandwiches were distributed at Queen Victoria Market where people in need gather. The remaining sandwiches were delivered to people in need at crisis accommodation in West and North Melbourne.
