From Sunday, March 23 to Tuesday, March 25, Melbourne was adorned in blue and white to mark Greek Independence Day, with a series of events organized by the Victorian National Day Committee and the Consulate General of Greece in Melbourne. With the blessing of Archbishop Makarios of Australia, Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne officially represented the Archdiocese at the commemorations.
Festivities began on Sunday with a memorial service at the Shrine of Remembrance, where Bishop Kyriakos, joined by local clergy, honored the fallen heroes of 1821. Addressing thousands of Greek Australians, he conveyed Archbishop Makarios’ blessings and emphasized the dual significance of March 25: the Greek Revolution and the Annunciation of the Theotokos. He highlighted the unity of national and religious identity, describing the day as a celebration of both freedom and divine hope.
In a moving gesture of unity, Bishop Kyriakos invited Bishop Evmenios of Khoras to lay a wreath at the Eternal Flame monument on behalf of the Archdiocese. This was followed by the official parade, showcasing the patriotism and cultural pride of the Greek community in Melbourne.
On Monday, March 24, the Consulate General hosted a reception at the Hellenic Museum. Representing the Archbishop, Bishop Kyriakos read the Archbishop’s official message, expressing gratitude for the community’s unwavering support. He also congratulated Consul General Dimitra Georgantzatou and Committee President Sophia Siachos for their dedication to the successful organization of the events. The reception was attended by dignitaries, including Metropolitan Ezekiel of Dervis, Bishop Evmenios, Premier of Victoria Jacinta Allan, members of parliament, and diplomats.
The celebrations concluded on Tuesday, March 25, with a memorial service at the Australian Hellenic Memorial and Shrine of Remembrance. Bishop Kyriakos, alongside Greek diplomats, community leaders, and students from Oakleigh Grammar and St. John’s College, paid tribute to the heroes of the Greek Revolution. The service reinforced the enduring connection between Orthodox faith and Hellenic heritage, inspiring the Greek-Australian community to uphold the values of sacrifice and unity for generations to come.
