On Friday, October 3, 2025, Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem received a courtesy visit from Sophie Becker, the newly appointed Consul General of Sweden in Jerusalem. The meeting marked the beginning of her tenure and provided an opportunity to discuss matters of mutual interest.
His Beatitude warmly welcomed Becker and briefed her on the Patriarchate’s ongoing pastoral, peacemaking, and cultural initiatives in the Holy Land. He highlighted the institution’s commitment to fostering coexistence and harmony among all communities in the region, despite the challenging circumstances posed by the ongoing conflict, particularly in Gaza.
A focal point of the discussion was the Patriarchate’s efforts in Gaza, notably at the Monastery of Saint Porphyrius, which continues its mission under difficult conditions. His Beatitude emphasised the importance of international support in maintaining the educational programs of the Patriarchate’s schools and addressing provocations from extremist elements.
At the conclusion of the visit, His Beatitude presented Becker with a silver-plated icon of Jerusalem as a token of appreciation. Ms Becker expressed her gratitude for the warm reception and assured His Beatitude of Sweden’s continued support for the Patriarchate’s endeavours, particularly in preserving the Status Quo of the Old City of Jerusalem.
