The Holy Eparchial Synod of the Archdiocese of Australia convened today, Friday, January 17, 2025, under the presidency of Archbishop Makarios of Australia.
After the opening prayer, the minutes of the previous meeting were approved, and the Synod proceeded to address the items on the agenda, making the necessary and appropriate decisions.
During the proceedings, and upon the proposal of Archbishop Makarios, the visiting Metropolitan Iakovos of Ireland, currently residing in the fifth continent, was honored with the Order of Philochristos of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia. After expressing his gratitude to the Archbishop and the Bishops for this distinction, Metropolitan Iakovos provided the Synod with an update on the efforts to establish and organize the newly formed Holy Metropolis of Ireland.
The Synod deliberated extensively and unanimously approved the “Special Regulation for the Compilation of the List of Eligible Candidates for the Episcopacy.” This regulation will be submitted by the Archbishop to the Ecumenical Patriarchate for final approval.
Acting as a Synodal Court, the Holy Eparchial Synod also reviewed the case of Deacon Marios Bagos. The Synod will forward its recommendations, as prescribed by the Holy Canons, to the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
The session concluded with the reaffirmation of the Synod’s commitment to addressing the pastoral and administrative needs of the Archdiocese and its faithful.
The Holy Synod will continue its work tomorrow, January 18.
