“Archbishop Demetrios of America – The Second Decade, 2009-2019” is the title of a new book by Dimitris Panagos and Rebecca Papadopoulou, recently published by Kordistos Publications.
The book focuses on the second decade of the tenure of former Archbishop of America, Demetrios, serving as a continuation of the earlier work by Greek-American photojournalist Dimitris Panagos and his wife, journalist Rebecca Papadopoulou. Their first book, titled “Archbishop Demetrios of America – The First Decade, 1999-2009,” was published by Livanis Publications.
The new book spans 560 pages, 200 more than the previous edition, and features over a thousand color photographs that document the journey of the Archbishop during his second decade of service.
The second decade, as is well known, was particularly challenging due to the economic crisis that the United States experienced in the preceding decade. This crisis had significant consequences, both for the finances of the Holy Archdiocese of America and for the construction of the historic St. Nicholas Church at the World Trade Center in New York.
The two aforementioned books are bilingual, offering Greek-Americans and Greeks worldwide the opportunity to gain a comprehensive view of the pastor’s work and the pivotal role of the Holy Archdiocese of America in the life of the Greek-American community. Additionally, they highlight the significant contribution of our Church within the multicultural and multireligious mosaic of America.
These two books are undoubtedly valuable contributions to the Greek-American archives and serve as unique, indispensable tools for future historians who will study the Greek-American experience.
By leafing through these two volumes, readers will gain a personal perspective on the multifaceted work and the pastorate of former Archbishop Demetrios of America.
Carefully examining the volumes, readers will realize that the work of Dimitris Panagos, the official photographer of the Holy Archdiocese of America, and Rebecca Papadopoulou, a journalist, was far from easy. They had the challenging task of selecting the thousand most representative photographs from the hundreds of thousands taken over the past 20 years.
Additionally, they meticulously categorized these images into sections and presented them chronologically, aiming to captivate the reader’s interest from the very first page, which includes the preface, the message from Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, and the biography of Demetrios—as a hierarch, an academic, and an author—up until the final, 560th page.
In their preface, Dimitris Panagos and Rebecca Papadopoulou express heartfelt gratitude for the generosity of the benefactors of the Greek community and the Church, Christos and Stella Spyropoulou, who also served as sponsors of the publication.
Two days ago, Dimitris Panagos, Rebecca Papadopoulou, and benefactor Christos Spyropoulos presented the book to the former Archbishop of America, Demetrios, who graciously offered his blessings and congratulations.
The book’s presentation will be scheduled in due course, with the date and location of the event to be announced once the first edition copies have been delivered by the transport company.
