Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed the media earlier today regarding the ongoing diplomatic efforts to initiate peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
Her comments follow recent reports from the Wall Street Journal indicating that a new round of peace talks may be convened in mid-June at the Vatican.
Responding to questions from the Italian press, Meloni stated: “These days we are in constant communication with a number of leaders both in Europe and the United States. I spoke just a few hours ago with President Trump, and we are working toward launching a new round of negotiations. Everyone is contributing, and I believe that Ukraine, in particular, is doing everything necessary.”
Meloni expressed appreciation for the willingness of the Holy See to serve as a host for the talks.
“I consider it especially valuable that the Vatican and, in particular, the Pontiff have shown a readiness to host the negotiations. I spoke with Pope Leo this past Tuesday,” she said.
She noted that while the Vatican is being considered, other potential venues are also under review.
“At this stage, this and other possibilities are being discussed. Especially for the first phase of the negotiations, at a technical level, there are various options being considered. What must be verified is the genuine willingness of all involved parties, as well as the realistic possibility of implementation,” she added.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need for substance over symbolism: “Beyond dates and venues, what matters is that serious talks take place — ones in which all participants are genuinely willing to engage and make progress.”
Meloni reiterated that the ultimate goal is a ceasefire and a comprehensive peace agreement: “Our main objective remains a ceasefire and the achievement of a broad peace agreement, which, as I always stress, must include security guarantees for the country under attack — that is, Ukraine.”
She concluded by underscoring the joint efforts underway: “At this time, we are working with many European leaders and with the United States to move as quickly as possible toward negotiations that begin at a technical level and gradually progress to a political level. In this regard, I consider the Vatican’s willingness to host the meetings particularly valuable.”
