Italian Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu announced a short while ago that he will not participate in the conclave set to begin on May 7, during which a successor to the late Pope Francis will be elected.
Becciu, 76 years old, stated that he is “obedient to the will of Francis,” referring to the late pontiff, who in 2020 had asked him to resign from his Vatican positions and renounce his rights as a cardinal following allegations related to financial misconduct.
By choosing not to take part in the conclave, Becciu respects the decision made during Pope Francis’ lifetime, maintaining his stance despite the cardinal’s ongoing claims of innocence.
