Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on social media addressing the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem following a missile incident over Jerusalem’s Old City.
According to the post, an Iranian missile exploded in the air above the historic area, with fragments falling near some of the most revered religious sites in the world. “Fragments fell on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre compound and near the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. The Iranian regime is targeting the holy sites of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Nothing is sacred to this regime,” the statement read.
Missile Fragment Lands Near Holy Sepulchre
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, March 16, 2026, when a large fragment from an intercepted missile fell in close proximity to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
According to a report by ERT, the debris, believed to be part of the missile’s guidance fins, landed near the church, raising serious concerns over the safety of religious landmarks in the area.
