According to journalists from Agence France-Presse, a projectile, possibly debris from a missile or an interception system, fell near the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem this afternoon.
Shortly after air raid sirens sounded in Israel, warning of incoming Iranian missiles, two powerful explosions were heard in the sky above Jerusalem, followed by a heavy impact on the ground.
The object landed near both the Armenian Quarter and the Jewish Quarter along the walls of the Old City, just a few hundred meters from the Temple Mount, the Al-Aqsa Mosque (the third holiest site in Islam), the Western Wall (the holiest place of Jewish worship), and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Footage from Israel’s Channel 12 shows a cratered road south of the Old City on Mount Zion.
Israeli soldiers and police have sealed off the area.
Israel denounced what it called “the madness of the Iranian regime.”
“Iran’s ‘gift’ for Eid al-Fitr (the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, celebrated today): missiles at Al-Aqsa,” wrote Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on X. Al-Aqsa is the third holiest site in Islam, located just a few hundred meters from the impact site.
He added, “The Iranian attack on holy sites sacred to three religions exposes the madness of the Iranian regime, which claims to be religious.”
