In accordance with ecclesiastical tradition, the beginning of the Indiction—the ecclesiastical New Year—was celebrated in Lusaka, alongside the feast commemorating Saint Alexander, the Patriarch of Constantinople. Since 1989, the Mother Church has dedicated Indiction Day to praying for the protection of the natural environment.
Following the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, Metropolitan John of Zambia led a procession with the icon of St. Alexander and conducted a blessing of the Fanouropita, a traditional Greek cake made in honor of Saint Fanourios. The day concluded with a communal meal, fostering fellowship and celebration among attendees.
