On Sunday, June 2, 2024 (beginning at 7:30 a.m.), Archbishop Makarios of Australia will preside over the inauguration of the renovated Holy Trinity Church in the suburb of Surry Hills, Sydney.
The historic Greek Orthodox Church, which is the oldest in Australia and the entire Southern Hemisphere, has undergone necessary restoration work in recent years.
It is recalled that the Holy Trinity Church was founded on May 29, 1898, and its construction was completed the following year in 1899. In 2010 the church was included in the list of cultural monuments by the competent authority of the State of New South Wales.
In June 2020, on the Feast of the Holy Spirit and about one year after he arrived in Australia, Archbishop Makarios visited the Holy Trinity Church and celebrated a liturgy. This was the first visit by an Australian Patriarch to the historic Greek Orthodox Church of the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales in about half a century.
