A memorial service for the rest of the souls of the people of Kalavryta who were executed by the German occupation troops on December 13, 1943, was held this morning by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece, at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Dormition of the Theotokos, in the presence of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
Also present were the Metropolitans Theocletos of Vrestheni, Pavlos of Servia and Kozani, Chrysostomos of Nicopolis and Preveza, Georgios of Karpenisi, Ieronymos of Kalavryta, as well as ministers, politicians, representatives of the local authorities, of local clubs and institutions, clergymen and lay people.
Later on they headed to the place of sacrifice in procession, where a memorial service was held, the names of the victims were read on the death roll and a wreath laying followed.
“We don’t forget. Never again,” said the President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, emphasizing that Kalavryta that have suffered so much, will forever, and in every direction, be a reminiscent of the most heinous war crime in Greece during World War II.
