Over a year into the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued unprecedented arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, holding them responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The decision has provoked strong reactions internationally and within Israel. In Washington, the U.S. government categorically rejected the ICC’s arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant. Additionally, the Dutch Foreign Minister postponed an official visit to Israel, signaling the growing diplomatic tension surrounding the court’s decision.
The ICC also issued a warrant for Mohammed Deif, the leader of Hamas’s military wing, who orchestrated a deadly incursion into southern Israel on October 7, 2023. That attack led to widespread military operations in Gaza, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and massive destruction in the Palestinian territory.
In response to the ICC’s move, Netanyahu delivered a televised address, assuring Israelis of his unwavering commitment to the nation’s defense: “No outrageous anti-Israel decision will deter us—especially me—from continuing to defend our homeland by every means necessary,” he declared.
Meanwhile, tensions in the region remain high, with at least 12 fatalities reported following Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon, further exacerbating the ongoing conflict.
