The faithful of Mount Sinai celebrated yesterday, according to the Old Calendar, the feast of Saint Catherine at the Saint Catherine’s Monastery at an altitude of 1600 m.
Metropolitan Joachim of Helenoupolis presided over the Vespers Service at the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Metropolitan Maximos of Ioannina was prayerfully attending in the altar and Archbishop Damianos of Mount Sinai, Faran and Raithu was blessing the faithful. Like every year, the only light during the Vespers Service was the one from the candles.
In the evening, Greece is represented by the Greek Consul General in Cairo, Giorgos Daskalopoulos, the Coordinator of Education in Cairo and the Middle East, Dimitris Giannikopoulos, and the President of the Hellenic Centre of Cairo, Nikolas Vadis, as well as many faithful from Greece, Egypt, Romania, Russia and other countries. Egyptian officials also attended the celebration and were warmly welcomed by the 26 monks of the St. Catherine’s Monastery.
