The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church convened on Friday in the Aula Magna “Patriarch Teoctist” of the Patriarchal Palace in Bucharest, under the presidency of Patriarch Daniel.
Alongside the hierarchs of the Romanian Orthodox Church, representatives of the Chancellery of the Holy Synod also took part in the session. Following the roll call read by Varlaam of Ploiești, Patriarchal Vicar Bishop and Secretary of the Holy Synod, and the confirmation of a quorum, Patriarch Daniel declared the meeting open and presented the distribution of work and the composition of the synodal committees.
Work in Four Synodal Committees
The work of the Holy Synod was carried out in four committees:
- the Pastoral, Monastic and Social Committee;
- the Theological, Liturgical and Educational Committee;
- the Canonical, Legal and Disciplinary Committee;
- the Committee for External Communities, Inter-Orthodox, Inter-Christian and Interreligious Relations.
Presentation of Official Publications
At the conclusion of the first part of the session, two official publications of the Romanian Orthodox Church were presented: the Holy Synod Yearbook for 2025 (Year X) and the Synodal Synaxarion of the Romanian Orthodox Church, published in 13 volumes by the Biblical and Missionary Institute of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
The presentation was delivered by Fr. Prof. Dr. George Grigoriță, Patriarchal Counselor at the Chancellery of the Holy Synod.
“These are the saints approved by the Holy Synod, for they are many among all Orthodox peoples,” Patriarch Daniel noted. “It is a monumental work, in 13 volumes, the last of which includes the alphabetical index.”
The participants in the meeting also received as a gift from Patriarch Daniel the Menaion of the Romanian Saints. “Volume 6 contains the services of the Romanian holy women canonized in the Centennial Year of the Romanian Patriarchate,” the Patriarch of Romania added.
Continuation of the Synodal Proceedings
The work of the Holy Synod was scheduled to continue later on Friday in plenary session, with the presentation of reports from the synodal committees that met earlier in the day.
