The Holy Light from Jerusalem will be brought to Romania on Holy Saturday via a special flight, following an agreement secured with the support of Romanian and Israeli authorities.
According to Archimandrite Ioan Meiu, representative of the Romanian Patriarchate at the Holy Places, the Romanian delegation has received all necessary approvals. “Thanks to the intervention of the Romanian Embassy in Israel, we received a flight corridor from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, departing from Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. With God’s help, we will bring the Holy Light to Bucharest on a special flight,” he stated.
He also expressed hope that the situation in the region will not escalate, allowing the mission to be completed successfully as “a great blessing for Romanian Orthodox believers.”
Adjusted Ceremony in Jerusalem
This year’s Holy Light ceremony will take place under exceptional conditions. Only Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem will enter the Holy Sepulchre, accompanied by a small number of clergy.
The Holy Light will then be distributed either from the Holy Sepulchre or from the Patriarchate in Jerusalem to delegations that have secured flights to their respective Orthodox countries.
Strict security measures remain in place, as the Old City of Jerusalem is still closed due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with religious gatherings and processions restricted.
Arrival in Romania
The Holy Light, brought annually to Romania since 2009, will be distributed across the country and the Republic of Moldova through representatives of local dioceses.
Upon arrival in Bucharest, it will be received at the Patriarchal Cathedral by Patriarch Daniel of Romania in a special ceremony, continuing a cherished Paschal tradition.
