The first official visit of Archbishop Ioannis of Tirana, Durrës, and All Albania to the city of Shkodra marked a moment of profound spiritual, institutional, and social significance. Widely regarded as one of the most meaningful and successful visits of his pastoral ministry within Albania to date, the visit offered a powerful testimony to the role of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania in strengthening peaceful coexistence, dialogue, and social harmony.
Shkodra, a city renowned for its rich cultural and religious heritage, welcomed the Archbishop in an atmosphere of reverence and unity. During his stay, Archbishop Ioannis presided over the Divine Liturgy at the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of Christ, where a large number of faithful gathered to participate in this significant event. In his pastoral homily, he reflected on the Gospel reading for the Sunday of the Forefathers, focusing on the Genealogy of Christ. He emphasized the importance of spiritual roots, the inheritance of faith, and continuity of tradition as foundational elements of Christian identity and the spiritual life of every believer.
Addressing contemporary challenges, Archbishop Ioannis spoke movingly about human responsibility and community, noting that life is not an individual possession but a gift from God that binds people together. He stressed that selfishness leads to isolation and spiritual emptiness, while the message of Christmas calls each person to inner renewal, purification of the heart, forgiveness, and active love for others. “The future depends on how we treat those closest to us,” he underlined, calling the faithful to live their faith through compassion, humility, and solidarity.
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Fr. Aleksandër Petani welcomed Archbishop Ioannis on behalf of the Orthodox community of Shkodra, describing the visit as historic. He reminded the faithful that Archbishop Ioannis himself played a decisive role in securing the land for the construction of the Church of the Nativity of Christ within just 24 hours, while the building of the church was later realized under the guidance of the late and ever-memorable Archbishop Anastas.
The visit continued with an official meeting at the Municipality of Shkodra, where Archbishop Ioannis , accompanied by Fr. Aleksandër and Fr. Nikolla, was received by Mayor Benet Beci and Deputy Mayor Teuta Qyteza. During the meeting, the Mayor presented the city’s ongoing development projects and highlighted the importance of preserving religious harmony as a cornerstone of civic life. Archbishop Joan, in turn, stressed that interreligious harmony, mutual respect, and fraternal coexistence constitute a priceless treasure not only for Shkodra but for the entire country, one that must be safeguarded for future generations.
A particularly meaningful moment followed with the Archbishop’s visit to the Mufti’s Office of Shkodra, where he held a warm and fraternal meeting with the Mufti of the Muslim Community of Shkodra, Mr. Muhamed Sytari. The encounter was marked by mutual respect and a shared commitment to strengthening interfaith dialogue and cooperation in the service of peace, solidarity, and human values. The Mufti congratulated Archbishop Ioannis on his election, describing him as a worthy successor of the late Archbishop Anastas, and praised his wisdom and the clarity of his messages, especially those concerning love for family and homeland. Both leaders emphasized dialogue, cooperation, and fraternity, with Archbishop Ioannis highlighting that religious harmony and cooperation also contribute to national security.
The visit concluded with a stop at the Catholic Cathedral of Shkodra, a symbolic and deeply meaningful gesture reinforcing the message of unity, respect, and coexistence among religious communities. Archbishop Ioannis was warmly received by Fr. Vlash Palaj, parish priest of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, in a spirit of brotherhood and mutual esteem.
Through these encounters, Shkodra once again affirmed its role as a rare and precious model of religious harmony, where differences do not divide but enrich social and spiritual life. Archbishop Ioannis visit was thus widely recognized as an event of broad and positive impact, strengthening the mission of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania as a bridge of dialogue and understanding, and placing Shkodra and Albania firmly on the map of universal values of peace, coexistence, and mutual respect.
