The women’s national water polo team concluded its first Olympic Games appearance in 16 years with a prestigious victory. The Greek team defeated Canada 19-10 and secured 7th place in the Paris event, where they pursued the title but fell short.
Elena Xenaki made an impressive impact at the 2m line, scoring two goals and drawing two penalties (the first of which was missed by Vaso Plevritou) within the first 11 minutes. Her performance helped the team to a 3-0 run and a 7-3 lead.
Despite Canada closing the gap to 7-5 with two unanswered goals in the final minute of the half, the Greek team maintained its control. Down 9-7 midway through the third period, the Greek squad responded with a 5-0 run, turning the remainder of the game into a decisive rout.
