The President of the Hellenic Republic, Constantine Tassoulas, on Thursday attended anniversary events in Corfu for the union of the Ionian Islands with Greece 162 years ago. In his message, he highlighted the importance of the union of the islands with Greece.
“The Union of the Ionian Islands strengthened the geopolitical foundation of the Greek state, honored the struggle of the islanders, and reminds all of us today of our duty, inspired by their struggle, to make an even greater effort for the progress of the Ionian Islands and for the prosperity and security of Greece against every threat,” he stressed.
Immediately after the parade, Tassoulas paid tribute to Greece’s first Governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias, by laying a wreath at his statue and making the following statement:
“Today we celebrate and honor the historic anniversary of the union of the Ionian Islands with Greece 162 years ago. The union of Corfu and, more generally, of the Ionian Islands with the national core took place at a time when the clear national ideology was the ‘Great Idea,’ which dominated the country’s political life for many decades – a national ideology based on unshakeable ethnic and historical claims.”
