President Katerina Sakellaropoulou called Turkey’s decision to reconvert the Hagia Sophia UNESCO monument to a mosque as one which “disputes our historical memory, irreparably undermines the values of tolerance and dialogue among religions, and poses a serious blow to the country’s relations with Greece, the European Union and the international community.”
She highlighted that “Hagia Sophia, an ecumenical monument, belongs to humanity and the world cultural heritage. It’s a symbol of Orthodoxy and the entire Christian world.”
