Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the historic Monastery of St. Dionysios on Mount Olympus after hiking along mountain trails from Prionia to the monastery.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by local residents and professionals actively involved in the region, who contribute to protecting its natural heritage and raising public awareness of Mount Olympus’ unique cultural and environmental significance.
During the hike, Mitsotakis exchanged views with fellow hikers on initiatives aimed at promoting the region and encouraging sustainable development, with full respect for the natural environment and the particular characteristics of mountainous areas.
Upon arriving at the Holy Monastery of St. Dionysios, the Prime Minister was welcomed by Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, Metropolitan Georgios of Kitros, Katerini and Platamon, and the monastery’s abbot, Father Maximos.
The visit also brought attention to the historic Monastery of the Presentation of the Theotokos at Petra, Mount Olympus, which was officially returned to the local Metropolis in 2025 following legislative action.
The monastery’s return came approximately a century after it had been converted, first into a sanatorium and subsequently into a psychiatric hospital. Metropolitan Georgios thanked the Prime Minister for the government’s involvement in returning the historic monastery to the Church, describing the move as the fulfillment of a longstanding request from the local community.
