Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the historic Penteli Monastery, where he met with the abbot to assess the damage caused by recent wildfires. During his visit, Mitsotakis received a detailed briefing from both the abbot and local authorities regarding the destruction suffered by the monastery and other buildings in the region. The Prime Minister assured that the government would expedite efforts to repair the damage and provide compensation to all those affected by the fires.
It is noteworthy that Greece faces severe firefighter shortages and inadequacies in fire prevention and management planning, which have made it increasingly difficult to control the devastating wildfires that break out every summer. These fires have not only destroyed forests and homes but also threatened cultural heritage sites, including monasteries and churches.
Speaking at a meeting with Attica regional authorities and mayors of fire-affected areas, Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of speeding up state aid processes. “We have a framework of state aid that is tried and tested, and we want to see it operate swiftly,” he said. He expressed confidence in the government’s ability to manage the situation, citing previous successful responses to natural disasters.
The Prime Minister, accompanied by several ministers, stressed the urgency of providing assistance to families and businesses impacted by the fires, underscoring the government’s commitment to restoring all the damage as quickly as possible.
