On Friday, July 5, 2025, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Iviron Monastery following his reception in Karyes, as part of his official visit to the Athonite Monastic State.
At the Iviron Monastery, the prime minister was warmly received with full honors. Elder Vasilios Gontikakis delivered a welcoming address, to which the Prime Minister responded. Mitsotakis was then given a guided tour of the monastery and met with members of the monastic community.
Divine Liturgy at Simonopetra Monastery
In the early hours, Prime Minister Mitsotakis, accompanied by his son Konstantinos, attended the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Monastery of Simonopetra, where he also stayed overnight.
According to government sources, at the conclusion of the service, the monks performed a memorial (trisagion) for the repose of Konstantinos and Marika Mitsotakis, the prime minister’s parents, as well as Pavlos Bakoyannis.
It is noteworthy that the names of the prime minister’s parents are listed as benefactors in the monastery’s diptychs, recognizing the support Konstantinos Mitsotakis provided to the monastery following the devastating fire of 1990.
Following the liturgy, the Prime Minister was officially welcomed by the monastic community. Abbot Elisaios delivered a speech highlighting the contributions of the Prime Minister and his family to Mount Athos, to which Mitsotakis responded.
During the service, the Prime Minister recited the Nicene Creed and the Sunday prayer in accordance with protocol.
Currently, the Prime Minister is visiting the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos.
