It is time to take crucial decisions for the European Union, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in an interview with CNN.
Asked whether he is in favour of taking more decisions by majority, Mitsotakis replied: “Consensus is desirable, but if necessary, we should proceed independently.” I support the need to examine the Draghi Report in its entirety, he said and added: We cannot just choose what is in our best interest.
He expressed his belief that the EU is at a new turning point and as he said some decisions should include common financing, while others should be related to simplifying regulations or addressing obstacles such as the Capital Markets Union.
Mitsotakis noted that the Recovery and Resilience Fund was established during the pandemic. Many believed that this would never happen, but in the end it did, because the circumstances required it, he added.
On Greece’s economic situation of Greece, Mitsotakis said that the country has achieved a remarkable recovery.
“At a time when other countries are facing fiscal problems, we are achieving primary surpluses. While other countries are increasing taxes, we are reducing them. And while industry is declining in other places, in Greece it is growing,” stressed Mitsotakis.
Regarding the Thessaloniki Metro, he said that it was not a simple project, as it incorporated the ancient finds that were discovered and revealed during its construction.
He described it as an “extremely complex project” because “parts of the ancient city of Thessaloniki were constantly coming to the surface during the excavations.”
The real challenge was to ensure that the project would be completed while preserving this unique cultural heritage. “And basically, what we had to do was to remove every piece with extreme care,” the Greek prime minister explained.
