Greek PM in London for the 3rd Greek Investment Conference

Greek PM to visit Thessaloniki tomorrow for Feast of St. Demetrius and Ohi Day

The Greek Prime Minister is paying a two-day official visit to London. On Monday, he will open the 3rd Greek Investment Conference organized by the Athens Stock Exchange and Morgan Stanley.

Mitsotakis is expected to present the state of the Greek economy and its investment opportunities while he will also meet with institutional investors.

According to government sources “the Greek economy continues to be the positive surprise of the eurozone. The yield of Greece’s 10-year bond is approaching the corresponding French one and Greece has the largest debt reduction in Europe.”

Later, Mitsotakis will participate in a special closed “workshop” organized by the Blair Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Institute of the former British Prime Minister has dealt extensively with the issue and has recently published a Guide for the use of Artificial Intelligence by governments.

Meeting with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister will meet for the first time with his British counterpart, Sir Keir Starmer, in Downing Street, “at a critical geopolitical juncture for the West and amid escalation on the Ukraine front,” according to a statement from his office.

According to government sources, this meeting will be a good opportunity to upgrade bilateral relations at all levels. Among other things, emphasis is expected to be placed on the sectors of Shipping, Research, Innovation and Tourism. It is worth noting that the United Kingdom is the second most important tourist market for Greece.

High on the agenda of the two leaders will also be migration. An issue that is increasingly concerning the United Kingdom as migration flows rise on a daily basis, and Greece is internationally recognized as having managed to deal with it effectively. Particularly with regard to the guarding and protection of its borders.

The topics of discussion also include the closer international cooperation of the United Kingdom with Greece as it will take on another dimension from the beginning of the year. Our country for the two-year period 2025-2026 will be one of the ten non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, while the United Kingdom is one of its five permanent members. Thus, the two states, together with the other members, will have to decide during this time, based on international law, on a series of issues that mainly concern global peace and security.

Starmer and Mitsotakis will also discuss issues of regional and international interest, with an emphasis on the latest developments in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as future UK-EU relations.

The new government in London has stated from the outset that it would like to put the country at the center of European cooperation, “building closer ties with the continent”, as Sir Keir Starmer has often emphasized. In this context, the two leaders are expected to examine ways in which Greece could contribute to improving European Union-UK relations.

Regarding the long-standing Greek request for the reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures, government sources pointed out that it will be raised to the British Prime Minister, but as they noted, this is an issue that is being discussed with the British Museum.
