Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was formally welcomed this morning by the members of the Double Holy Assembly of Mount Athos, the abbots and representatives of the twenty monastic communities, upon his arrival in Karyes, the administrative center of Mount Athos. His visit marks the beginning of a two-day official tour of the Holy Mountain.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis arrived in Karyes by helicopter. At the square, he was welcomed by Elder Abraham, the Protos (First Elder) of Mount Athos, and Alkiviadis Stefanis, the Civil Administrator of Mount Athos. He was then escorted to the entrance of the Protaton, where he greeted the abbots and monastery representatives and venerated the icon of the Virgin Mary “Axion Esti.”
At this hour, a Doxology is being held at the Protaton in the Prime Minister’s presence. The ceremony will be followed by an address from the Holy Protos and a response from the Prime Minister, as well as an official visit to the headquarters of the Holy Community.
