Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis received Athens Mayor Haris Doukas on Friday to discuss the preparations in the Greek capital for Greece’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, in the second half of 2027, as well as the city’s day-to-day problems. The meeting was also attended by Interior Minister Thodoris Livanios.
Both sides underlined the need for good coordination between the state and local government, both for the implementation of major developmental infrastructure works and for improving the quality of daily life for Athenians.
Greeting the mayor, the prime minister said the meeting would provide an opportunity “to discuss matters, as I understand it, that concern the preparation of the city ahead of the European presidency, which as you know begins on July 1, 2027. It is an opportunity, I think, to show our city at its best and also to discuss general issues that concern the municipality – this is why the minister responsible is with us – from ongoing issues, such as sanitation, to more major developmental challenges.”
Doukas thanked the prime minister and said it was extremely important to look at all this city infrastructure that is very important and needs to be strengthening, modernisation. “I think that we can, in collaboration with the minister, have the state as a whole proceed with some actions that I will propose that will have an immediate impact in improving the quality of life for citizens,” he added.
