Greek Orthodox Church to celebrate Enthronement of new Metropolitan in Atlanta

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America will host the enthronement ceremony of Metropolitan Sevastianos, the new spiritual leader of the Atlanta Metropolis, on Saturday, January 25, 2025. This momentous event will take place at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, located at 2500 Clairmont Road, Atlanta, GA.

The Atlanta Metropolis, which encompasses communities across Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee, and the Carolinas, is home to 75 parishes and more than 20,000 Greek Orthodox families. His Eminence Metropolitan Sevastianos succeeds Metropolitan Alexios, who served faithfully since 1997 and recently retired.

About Metropolitan Sevastianos

Metropolitan Sevastianos has worked closely with the outgoing Metropolitan Alexios since 2019, ministering to the Orthodox faithful and visiting parishes throughout the Metropolis. His leadership is expected to guide the community into a new era, continuing the legacy of spiritual care and service.

Event Highlights

The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m., with attendees encouraged to arrive by 9:15 a.m. The event will be chaired by Tim Tassopoulos, retired President and COO of Chick-fil-A, alongside dignitaries from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, local and state officials, and members of the Orthodox community.

This is only the second time in the history of the Atlanta Metropolis that such an enthronement is being celebrated, making it a significant occasion for both the local and wider Orthodox community.

The Significance of the Enthronement

The Greek Orthodox Church, the second-largest Christian church in the world with over 300 million members globally and 1.5 million in the U.S., views the enthronement of a new Metropolitan as a deeply meaningful and joyous event. Metropolitan Sevastianos will serve as the spiritual leader of the Atlanta Metropolis, ensuring the continuity of faith, tradition, and community outreach.

RSVP Information

Community members and guests planning to attend the enthronement are asked to RSVP in advance to ensure seating and accommodation.

Join the celebration as the Greek Orthodox Church marks this historic event, welcoming His Eminence Metropolitan Sevastianos as the new shepherd of the Atlanta Metropolis.
