Greek MFA calls for immediate ceasefire and lasting peace in Ukraine

On February 24, 2025, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement marking the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The ministry expressed profound sorrow and respect for the thousands of lives lost and the extensive destruction caused by the conflict.

The statement highlighted the plight of the Greek diaspora in Mariupol and surrounding areas, acknowledging that they have endured the horrors of war and continue to face its repercussions.

Reaffirming Greece’s unwavering commitment to international law and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, the ministry condemned any use or threat of force against sovereign nations.

The announcement concluded with a call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the establishment of a universally accepted, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine.

This stance aligns with Greece’s consistent support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as previously demonstrated in statements by Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis. In his address to the UN Security Council on September 21, 2023, Gerapetritis emphasized that the Russian invasion of Ukraine remains “a serious threat to European security, as well as to global peace and stability.” He reiterated Greece’s and the EU’s commitment to stand by Ukraine in its pursuit of a democratic society.
