Greek Government Spokesman Pavlos Marinakis firmly denied any involvement by the government in the upcoming election of the new Metropolitan of Kydonia and Apokoronas, calling such claims “a conclusion of science fiction.”
During his regular press briefing on Thursday, Marinakis addressed the issue following a question from the press regarding whether the government had interfered in the Church of Crete’s process for electing a new metropolitan. The question came in the wake of an official statement by the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Church of Crete, which accused the government of attempting to influence the election through legislative amendments introduced in a recent Ministry of Defense bill.
Marinakis clarified that any such allegations are unfounded. “The idea that the government is orchestrating such a process — that is, the election of the Metropolitan of Kydonia — is a conclusion of science fiction,” he stated emphatically.
Earlier in the briefing, the spokesman also confirmed the conclusion of a meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, without providing further details.
