The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration camp by the Soviet Army on January 27, 1945. The day is recognized as both International and National Holocaust Remembrance Day.
“Six million Jews were exterminated by the Nazis across Europe, including 67,151 Greeks. We pay tribute to the victims of this atrocity,” the Ministry’s statement declared.
The statement emphasized the enduring responsibility to honor and preserve the memory of the Holocaust: “With only a few Survivors still among us, our obligation and the weight of responsibility grow heavier. We must pass on the respect, knowledge, and remembrance of the Holocaust to future generations to ensure that the heinous crime of mass murder during World War II against humanity is ‘NEVER AGAIN’ repeated.”
The Ministry also highlighted the ongoing need to combat hatred and promote tolerance. “It is our duty to intensify the collective fight against antisemitism, racism, intolerance, and discrimination and to work together for the peaceful coexistence of humanity,” the statement concluded.
