Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias stressed the need to expand the membership of the Conference on Disarmament during his participation in the United Nations Conference on Disarmament 2021, via a recorded address due to protection measures against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Greek foreign minister reiterated Greece’s expectation to become a full member of the Conference, recalling that it is the oldest observer and emphasizing how outdated it was that Greece should be “a hostage of unacceptable obstacles raised by another state, due to alleged bilateral issues.”
During his speech, Dendias reiterated his belief that arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation remain key components of international stability, and noted that Greece remains committed to legally binding, treaty-based, viable, and functional arms control system.
In this context, Dendias pointed out that Greece welcomes the extension of the New START Treaty. It firmly supports the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and its three pillars (nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear disarmament, and peaceful use of nuclear energy).
