Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis gave an interview to Action 24 TV, addressing recent tensions over the leadership of St. Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai.
Commenting on the situation at the historic monastery, Gerapetritis emphasized that the Greek government seeks minimal direct involvement, respecting the ecclesiastical nature of the issue: “The Greek government is trying to have as little involvement as possible. These are ecclesiastical matters, issues of Canon Law, which the Church and the Monastery itself should resolve. What we do is provide the necessary tools for these issues to be settled.”
He expressed confidence that tensions will soon ease: “We believe that in the immediate future, this abnormal situation will stabilize. We expect to see a unified leadership, because, in fairness, the efforts currently being made to resolve the Monastery’s issues face certain ecclesiastical realities. We aim to help end this division.”
The Minister also confirmed ongoing communication with the Egyptian government over the matter, stressing Athens’ commitment to a diplomatic and balanced resolution that respects both the monastic community and regional stability.
