On March 25, 2025, the Greek Embassy in London hosted a celebratory reception at the Ambassador’s Residence, marking the 204th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence.
In a spirit of national pride and reflection, the event gathered Greek and international guests, including dignitaries, diplomats, academics, artists, and members of the Greek diaspora. Ambassador Yannis Tsaousis welcomed attendees throughout the day, including IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, senior UK officials, Lords and MPs, heads of foreign missions, and military representatives.
Speeches from Lord Coaker and Dr. David Landsman, both long-time friends of Greece, highlighted the historic and enduring ties between Greece and the United Kingdom. Ambassador Tsaousis emphasized the deep-rooted relationship based on shared values, the historical role of Philhellenism in Britain, and the current dynamic cooperation in areas such as trade, tourism, culture, education, and defense.
Guests experienced a rich program including:
Performances of the national anthems of Greece and the UK by violinist Dr. Georgios Zacharias and soprano Simona Mihai, joined by their son.
A moving rendition of both anthems by artist Kara Marni.
Traditional attire presentation by members of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women.
A youth-led reflection on the symbolism of the 1821 Revolution by representatives of the “Youth Ambassadors” program and members of the wider diaspora.
The embassy also hosted a rare exhibition of weapons and artifacts from the Greek Revolution, curated from the private collection of Menelaos Danelis, including a Greek naval yataghan, a kariofili musket, and an original “Medal of the Struggle” awarded by King Otto.
The event concluded with a moment of silence to honor those who fought and died for freedom, democracy, and human rights.
