On July 28, 2025, the relevant Parliamentary Committee completed the review of a landmark bill establishing a public legal entity in Greece named the “Hellenic Orthodox Holy Royal Autonomous Monastery of the Holy and God-Trodden Mount Sinai in Greece.” The legislation also includes provisions to enhance security in higher education institutions and promote sports.
Greek Minister of Education, Sophia Zacharaki, described the bill’s progress as a “historic vindication.” She referenced the testimony of Archbishop Damianos of the Sinai Monastery before the Parliamentary Committee, emphasizing his calm and heartfelt expression of concern for safeguarding the historical continuity of a unique spiritual and cultural center. This monastery, continuously operating since the sixth century, serves as a beacon of Orthodoxy, knowledge, coexistence, and peace.
Minister Zacharaki stressed, “The State does not remain indifferent to these concerns. It does not respond with mere promises but with institutional guarantees and respect to ensure and fortify the establishment in Greece—after 15 centuries—of a public legal entity.”
