On Holy Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, Mr. Giannis Loverdos, responsible for Hellenes Abroad, held a cordial meeting with the Israeli Ambassador to Greece, Mr. Noam Katz, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens.
The meeting took place in a “particularly warm and friendly atmosphere,” as noted by Mr. Loverdos on social media: “Today I welcomed the Ambassador of Israel, Mr. Noam Katz, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a ceremonial meeting that took place in an exceptionally warm climate.”
During the discussion, the two officials reaffirmed the excellent level of bilateral relations between Greece and Israel and explored topics of mutual interest. One of the key subjects addressed was the upcoming Ceremony of the Holy Light in Jerusalem.
The Deputy Minister confirmed his upcoming visit to the Holy City to personally receive and escort the Holy Light (Άγιο Φως) back to Greece for the celebration of Orthodox Easter.
“We had the opportunity to discuss the upcoming Ceremony of the Holy Light, in view of my trip to Jerusalem to bring it back to our homeland,” Mr. Loverdos said.
The annual reception and transfer of the Holy Light from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the most cherished traditions in Orthodox Christianity, symbolizing the Resurrection of Christ and uniting the faithful in Greece and the diaspora.
